Hiring a Maid in Singapore

Below are some common questions about hiring a maid in Singapore in 2024:

How to find the best maid agency in Singapore?

Choosing the right maid agency in Singapore is crucial for a positive experience.

Begin by verifying the agency's accreditation with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and assessing its industry experience.

Valuable perspectives on the company's reputation and the quality of its services can be gleaned from online reviews and testimonials.

Who should pay for my maid's air ticket?

According to the guidelines set by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), employers are required to cover the complete cost of hiring a Foreign Domestic Worker (FDW).

This obligation extends to shouldering the expenses for booking air tickets for the maids both at the onset and conclusion of their employment.

How do I know if my maid agency is legit?

To check if your maid agency is legit and to confirm its authenticity, use the Ministry of Manpower (MOM)'s Employment Agencies and Personnel Search, also known as the EA Directory, by entering the agency's name and searching for it.

Can I hire two maids in Singapore?

You may be eligible to hire a second migrant domestic worker (MDW) if you meet any of the following criteria:

  • You or your spouse is at least 60 years old, you have at least two children below 18 years old living with you
  • Or you have a parent or parent-in-law who is at least 60 years old and residing with you.
Is it easy to hire a maid in Singapore?

Yes, it is easy. However, hiring a maid in Singapore involves adhering to several legal requirements.

Firstly, you must apply for a work permit through the Ministry of Manpower, a process that spans several weeks.

Necessary documents, including proof of employment and a medical examination for the maid, are also required for the application.

What is the age limit for Foreign Domestic Workers (FDWs)?

The Foreign Domestic Worker (FDW) must be female and between 23 and 50 years of age at the time of application.

Applicants who are over 50 are not eligible for initial applications; they can only renew their Work Permit.

Can I return my maid to the agency?

Indeed, you can transfer your maid through a maid or employment agency (EA).

If you are contemplating moving your Foreign Domestic Worker (MDW) to a different employer, involving an EA is the best way to simplify the process.

Once the EA agrees to assist with the transfer, they are responsible for cancelling the current Work Permit.

Subsequently, the EA takes charge of the helper's well-being until she is matched with a new employer.

This involves ensuring she has suitable accommodation, ample food, and access to necessary medical treatment.

If the transfer is unsuccessful, the EA also handles the process of repatriating the helper back to her home country.

To initiate a transfer through an EA, the initial step is to confirm whether your helper is open to transferring to another employer.

This approach guarantees a well-organised and regulated transition for the MDW, guided by the expertise of the EA.

Do employers pay maid agencies?

A placement fee, or maid loan, is the amount you pay to a maid agency for their help in recruiting and arranging employment for a maid.

It's like a loan the maid needs to start working, and as the employer, you need to cover this cost initially.

Can maids have boyfriends in Singapore?

Ultimately, maids, like any other human being in Singapore, should have the freedom to make their own choices in romantic relationships, and employers should respect that.

However, the employer is not required to provide insurance/monetary assistance for this, and they have the right to request that the worker covers any dating-related expenses themselves.
